Clever captures (2)
In this lesson, you will practise some more with good and bad captures. With a good capture, you gain points. A bad capture causes you to lose points.Take a look at the example.
White’s knight can capture either the bishop or the knight. Both are loose pieces, so Black won’t be able to recapture. Both captures appear to be good. But they aren’t!
The black bishop threatens the white rook. So the clever move is to take the attacker.
Should White decide to take the knight, Black will take the rook with his bishop. Now it’s Black who gains the most points.
So, don’t just focus on clever moves for yourself. Also think about what the other player can do!
What do you have to do?
Make the best capture. Remember to spot your opponent’s threats.
